Control and replan using Earned Value and Risk

Project Management is a fundamental theme to understand and work in any business environments. Once projects are properly planned, the job of a Project Manager is just started. Indeed, PMs need to properly control, re plan, and manage risks during the execution of the project. During the course, the Earned Value Management System – the standard and most diffused technique to properly manage time and cost in a project – is presented. In doing so, the concepts of BCWS (the time-phased budget), the BCWP (the earned value) and ACWP (the actual costs of what has been performed) are introduced along with the main indicators that help managers in taking decision on how to replan the projects according to the estimation at completion. Finally, the main approaches to identify and manage risks are introduced along with the closing phase.

 

Life cycle and project planning

Project Management is a fundamental theme to understand and work in any business environments. One of the main skills that Project Managers need to have deals with the ability to manage the project during its entire life-cycle and to plan the work needed to achieve the final result. During the course, the various phases of a typical project are presented. Then, various practical tools are presented aiming to help professionals in actually manage their projects through useful instruments. Among the others, the Scope Statement helps managers in identifying and clearly define what is and what is not part of the project, the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) helps in identifying the activities, the Organizational Breakdown Structure (OBS) in managing the team, the Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) to match activities and people, while the Gantt Chart provides a time-based view on the project.

 

Project Management beyond planning and control

Project Management is a fundamental theme to understand and work in any business environments. Projects are the organizational way to make innovation happen and to realize any kind of custom solution or to change how an organization work. Project Management is the set of capabilities, skills and tools to properly work on projects. The course aims to define the concept of a project and to show how, in the management of a successful business, project management and process management must coexist and integrate. During the course the project is analyzed as a managerial tool for the management of change and innovation and its links with the company strategy are emphasized.

This MOOC is part of the Introduction to Management Engineering series, which is designed to introduce prospect master students and people interested in managerial disciplines into the key fundamentals of Management Engineering. Through an analytical and engineering approach, the series provides basic concepts and language in the areas of Strategy, Economics, Financial Accounting, Organization, and Operations Management.

Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

The MOOC deals with the problems created, aggravated or transformed by AI. It is intended to give students a chance to reflect on the ethical, social, and cultural impact of AI by focusing on the issues faced by and brought about by professionals in AI but also by citizens, institutions and societies. The MOOC addresses these topics by means of case studies and examples analyzed in the light of the main ethical frameworks.

The series investigates why artificial intelligence is nowadays considered the most disruptive enabling technologies up to at least 2050 and gives basic groundings for a preliminary approach to the area. It also deepens ethical issues and national strategies.

Artificial Intelligence: An Overview

The MOOC will provide a non-technical overview of the artificial intelligence field. Initially, a discussion on the birth of AI is provided, remarking the seminal ideas and preliminary goals. Furthermore, the crucial weaknesses are presented and how these weaknesses have been circumvented. Then, the current state of AI is presented, in terms of goals, importance at national level, and strategies. Moreover, the taxonomy of the AI topics is presented.

Managing Changes

The only constant in our lives is change. Sometimes, we consciously decide to make a change in our lives (eg. when we change jobs, or when we move to a new city); at other times the environment changes around us, forcing us to adapt to new conditions. Sometimes change is a moment of joy and curiosity for new things, at others it represents a period of grief and mourning for what we leave behind. Sometimes change is evident, profound and irreversible, sometimes it takes place in a more subtle way, via a long and inexorable process. But in any situation, change represents the end of one state and the beginning of another. Change often means abandoning old habits and certainties to open up to the new and unexplored. Each period of learning in our lives is based on this concept: only thanks to courage and the will to get out of your zone of comfort, can you learn new skills and abilities. It is not the change in itself that scares us, but the idea that we create of it. We rush to label the new situation as good or bad luck, but it is our subjective interpretation of the facts that will impact how we experience the moment of change. How many times have we cried in front of a door that is closed to us, regardless of the door that was opening up somewhere else? In this course, you will learn the main dynamics related to personal and professional individual moments of change. Knowing the dynamics, it will be easier to be aware of emotions (your own and of others) that any change brings.
